Night sky

The night sky is certainly awe-inspiring, yet I feel as though it is harder to appreciate when living in a city, which has so many distractions. The stars are harder to see and one feels so much farther away from nature. It's as though they don't have much bearing on our lives besides a passing interest. Professor Goulding's question about whether we have ever measured our time with the celestial bodies as opposed to clocks got me thinking. We live every day according to a number on the clock, when measured time was actually originally derived from the movements of the celestial bodies. I can't imagine ever just relying on the phases of the moon or the earth's rotation to measure my life. Our lives are so busy that we just stick to numbers on the calendar, and this is how we mark special events. We know people's birthdays, for instance, by numbers, but we don't really bother to know what it means in terms of the celestial bodies.
