Ether

In response to Zach, if I remember from high school physics, I think ether was used by Einstein because light moves as a wave. Waves always need to travel through a medium, and yet it appears as if light travels through vacuums. I think ether was proposed as the answer to the question, what is the undetectable medium through which light travels? I can't remember if the concept is still used today to answer this question.
