Why?

So I read the trial documents, and I understand the evidence as presented. But what I don't understand is the "why" question. Why does the Church care? Did they really think that Galileo's discoveries overturned all of the Christian religion? Was it just a power trip? Jared's question was why does the Church matter, my question is why does Galileo matter to the Church?
