The Una"Maze"ing 3rd Law

What I find as truly amazing in these past readings, which is not emphasized as much as it should, is Kepler's 3rd Law. Also known as the Law of Harmony. Kepler was able to use mathematics to predict something a physical world, and not just a calculation of when an eclipse occurs (because the basis of that is based on experience of when they have been in the past and various calculations) and also not just a save the appearance kind of prediction. He was able to align mathematics and physical world. He set a standard that math does not only describe what we see, but also that mathematical order is built into the universe. This is so astonishing that even his contemporaries did not know what to make of it: "As to the harmonic law, or third law, we may ask with the voice of Galileo and his contemporaries, Is this science or numerology?" (Cohen 145). It is both but they are no longer mutually exclusive: theoretical math can be applied to the universe. Kepler led the way through the labyrinth with his discovery and set the stage for later greats such as Newton and Einstein with his truly unamazing 3rd Law.
