some final thoughts on save the phenomenon

Just to say a few more thoughts on our reading for Wednesday...While I do think that having a certain cognizance of our place in the universe and how much we can really know about it is important (or at least a recognition that it's a gradual learning process), it also worries me that this idea of "Save the Phenomenon" can backfire. If you say "save the phenomenon" about astronomy, couldn't you say that about anything? Proclus says, "The astronomers who are eager to prove the uniformity of celestial motions are in danger of unconsciously proving that their nature is irregular and full of changes." Even if the rebuttle argument is that well, this is only about astronomy, how can you live in a world where the phenomena around you is completely incomprehensible, despite attempts? Would people like Proclus not find any significance in the fact that mathematics do at least seem to explain astronomy, at least until the next theory?
