Separation of theology and science

Galileo really stresses the need to separate theology/biblical interpretation from demonstrative physical science. However, he describes them both as manifestations of the divine. It would be interesting to discuss just how he reconciles these two ideologies. What exactly is his stance on religion and the Church? How does his stance compare to that of Bacon, who also believed in the demonstrative power of science, and his theological views?
