I'm ok with living a lie
I don't really understand the concerns with the "save the phenomena" approach. While at first it sounds like a red flag to teach theories that are obviously wrong to the masses, they didn't have many options. As Kate said, early astronomers didn't have the instruments necessary to confirm their theories, so realistically they could have either a) done the best they could and believed it or b) done the best they could and admitted that it was still probably wrong. I think it's much better to acknowledge science's shortcomings openly.
